Robert Livingstone is one of 15 science students who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2009. Robert's research project, NMR analysis of Stereocontrolled Polymerizations, was supervised by Dr. Michael Shaver, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.
Sara Accardi is an undergraduate chemistry student from the University of Western Ontario, working at UPEI for the summer. She is here on a student exchange program called RISE (Reactive Intermediates Student Exchange). Rachael Hankinson is an Honours Chemistry major from Lantz, Nova Scotia, a town halfway between Halifax and Truro. She is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. Rachael's research project, Isolation and structural identification of bioactive compounds in sponge extracts, was supervied by Dr. Russ Kerr, Canada Research Chair in Marine Natural Products.
Kristine Giddings is working towards her Honours BSc in Chemistry (with a minor in Math) at the University of Prince Edward Island and is from Stratford, PEI. She is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. Kristine's research project, Modifications of extracts from marine corals to test for medicinal properties, was supervised by Dr. Russ Kerr, Canada Research Chair in Marine Natural Products.
Katherine Robertson graduated in May 2008 with an Honours BSc in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Prince Edward Island. She is originally from Mt. Mellick, PEI, and now lives in Charlottetown. She is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. Katherine's research project, Exactly Solvable Systems of Linear Differential Equations, was supervised by Dr. Nasser Saad, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Justin Bélanger is a Chemistry major at UPEI. He has lived on Prince Edward Island, on and off, for the past twenty-two years, mostly in the Hunter River area. Justin is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. His research project, New chemical compounds could lead to more environmentally secure batteries, was supervised by Dr. Rabin Bissessur, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry.
Ali Fatehi is working towards an Honours BSc in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UPEI. He moved to PEI about 5 years ago, and lives in Charlottetown with his family. He is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. His research project, Modeling Avascular Tumor Growth in Cancer Research, was supervised by Dr. Nasser Saad, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
In 2009, Ali received another Undergraduate Summer Research Award from NSERC. This research project, The Mathematics of Cancer, was also supervised by Dr. Nasser Saad.
Jaclyn O'Brien is from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She just recently graduated from UPEI with her Honours in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. She is one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. Her research project, Using fluorescence chemistry to describe binding of complex molecules, was supervised by Dr. Brian Wagner, 3M Canada Teaching Fellow.
Adam Proud is a Chemistry major and one of 26 science students at UPEI who were awarded an Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) from NSERC (the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) for 2008. Adam's research project, Nickel Cluster Intercalation Compounds: Novel Thiophene Binding Compounds, was supervised by Dr. Rabin Bissessur, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry.
In 2009, Adam received another Undergraduate Summer Research Award from NSERC. This research project, Novel Solid Electrolytes/Grahite Oxide Nanocomposites was also supervised by Dr. Rabin Bissessur.
Professor Brian Wagner from the UPEI Chemistry Department, presented a 40 minute lesson on his research into using luminescence in pesticides to track fish health in PEI waterways to grade 6 French Immersion students.
