The Webster Centre is a unique facility located in the Annex of the Robertson Library Building at the University of Prince Edward Island. It provides a central place for resources and people committed to the academic success of students, the professional development of faculty, and the integration of complementary programs that support teaching and learning.
The Webster Centre partners with UPEI's Student Services, the Centre for Life-Long Learning and other campus groups that provide academic support programs. Their input and partnership has allowed the Webster Centre to maximize the use of resources to better identify gaps in services and to thereby create strategies that more closely target demonstrated areas of need. UPEI maintains a commercial partnership with Andrews Hockey Growth Programs, which has trained local and international students for over 20 years. The UPEI campus provides on ice training at MacLauchlan Arena, while accommodations and food services are arranged through UPEI Conference Services.
Mandy Lise McKenna, a fifth-year player with the soccer Panthers, was the 2008 recipient of the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. An Academic All-Canadian, she is an exceptional Engineering student and athlete who gives back to her team and to the entire community.
Mandy has been a co-leader of the UPEI Athletic Council which, over two years, has raised more than $10,000 for the IWK Children's Hospital, Cancer Research on PEI, and other charitable causes. Her team has supported a wide array of sport and community outreach activities that benefit food banks, seniors, newcomers, sick children, and people in developing countries. And it is Mandy who has inspired her fellow athletes to participate in full force.
Each year UPEI is involved with hosting a Student Leadership Symposium for senior high school students from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. The intent is recruitment and community realtionship development. This symposium celebrates youth leadership and emphasizes how students can learn to make a positive impact on important world issues. Participants are able to share their concerns and ideas in small-group sessions that explore a range of topical issues related to leadership, including social action, international outreach, and environmental stewardship.
Holland College and UPEI Athletics have a strong partnership, working to develop and support post-secondary recreation and sport opportunities. Holland College also calls UPEI home for all their basketball, soccer, and rugby home games.
