The Webster Centre is a unique facility located in the Annex of the Robertson Library Building at the University of Prince Edward Island. It provides a central place for resources and people committed to the academic success of students, the professional development of faculty, and the integration of complementary programs that support teaching and learning.
The Webster Centre partners with UPEI's Student Services, the Centre for Life-Long Learning and other campus groups that provide academic support programs. Their input and partnership has allowed the Webster Centre to maximize the use of resources to better identify gaps in services and to thereby create strategies that more closely target demonstrated areas of need. The Webster Centre reaches far beyond the geographic location of the university through the English Academic Preparation (EAP) program. EAP is a bridging...
Students in UPEI's School of Nursing work to promote public health through their clinical placements in health centres, public health offices, hospitals, and manors across Prince Edward Island. In the fall 2009 semester alone, UPEI placed 240 students all across these clinical sites. Fourth-year nursing students also provided much-needed assistance with H1N1 vaccination clinics in November. They worked in public health offices in Charlottetown, Summerside, and Souris, and in various schools across the province.
This year, the new Mentorship@upei initiative, launched through the Coordinator of Student Retention and Engagement, provides an avenue for faculty and staff to interact with new students, recognizing that many of them have basic questions or anxieties about adjusting to university, or simply require a person whom they know they can talk to. As universities everywhere, especially in the Atlantic region, identify enrolment and retention as critical challenges and a front for ever-greater competition, the imperative is clear to enhance the overall level of student engagement and success. This begins with the individual student, and with a human touch, and provides us collectively with an opportunity to show that at UPEI students truly do come first. To date, more than 80 staff and faculty colleagues have signed up to participate in the Mentorship program, and there is room for more....
UPEI maintains a commercial partnership with Andrews Hockey Growth Programs, which has trained local and international students for over 20 years. The UPEI campus provides on ice training at MacLauchlan Arena, while accommodations and food services are arranged through UPEI Conference Services.
Dr. Bill Whelan recently led a proposal-writing workshop for high school students at Charlottetown Rural who are interested in participating in the Sanofi Aventis Challenge, a national competition that encourages young Canadians to pursue studies and careers in the field of biotechnology.
Mandy Lise McKenna, a fifth-year player with the soccer Panthers, was the 2008 recipient of the Student-Athlete Community Service Award. An Academic All-Canadian, she is an exceptional Engineering student and athlete who gives back to her team and to the entire community.
Mandy has been a co-leader of the UPEI Athletic Council which, over two years, has raised more than $10,000 for the IWK Children's Hospital, Cancer Research on PEI, and other charitable causes. Her team has supported a wide array of sport and community outreach activities that benefit food banks, seniors, newcomers, sick children, and people in developing countries. And it is Mandy who has inspired her fellow athletes to participate in full force.
The purpose of the Canadian Math Society (CMS) is to champion mathematics through initiatives that explain, promote, and increase the general understanding of mathematics; provide extracurricular opportunities for students; and encourage partnerships with corporate, government, and not-for-profit agencies.
Each year, the Mathematics and Statistics Department invites Grade 10 and 11 students from PEI high schools to attend, based on academic excellence.
Young mathematicians explore the world of math in their daily lives and engage in various math activities, including demonstrations, math Olympics, touchdown math, and other challenging problem-solving competitions. They end the week with a giant math scavenger hunt and barbecue. UPEI staff, students, and faculty members work hard to make this experience a success each year.

Students work with family-related professionals in these organizations as part of their professional practice course. The field placements give students many opportunities to integrate theory with practice in a supportive setting. Students’ tasks mirror those of the family professionals who serve as field placement supervisors to the students. Since this program began, 48 various organizations have hosted students from the Family Science and Child and Family Studies Programs.
Third-year students volunteer for a total of 32 hours during the fall semester. Fourth-year students require a total of 80 hours per semester in both the fall and winter semesters.
The mission is "to add value to the co-op student" by enhancing student learning in a real world context, while adding value to businesses whether locally or globally. Approximately 100 students participate each year in the Business Co-op program.
This program was established at UPEI in 1996.
During the summer of 2009, there were 57 students in co-op work placements. Of those, 50 chose to stay on PEI: 44 students in Charlottetown, 5 students in Summerside, and 1 in Hunter River.
